Art Night 2017 @ Leyden Gallery | 1st July 2017

Re-visiting 'Song of the Shirt' a film in four parts.

Presented by filmmaker & artist Sue Clayton, in conversation with Daniella Shreir.

Clayton will be in conversation with founder and editor of Another Gaze film journal Daniella Shreir before introducing the seminal 1979 film to Art Night visitors.

Song of the Shirt a film directed by Sue Clayton and Jonathan Curling (1979) is re-visited and screened at Leyden Gallery on July 1st in association with Artnight 2017 and the Whitechapel Gallery.

This special screening continues a site specific and culturally significant conversation, addressing the plight of the Victorian seamstresses of Spitalfields in a new and developing context where the area is still resonating in its history of troubled exile and as a place of refuge. Women and work are at the heart of this project as it also intersects with the feminist project of avant-garde filmmaking of the 1970s in this area including the organisations, Four Corners and Circles.

Four Years after Leyden Gallery brought the film back into circulation (first screening it at the Genesis cinema in Nov 2013) the seminal 1979 film Song of the Shirt is back at Leyden Gallery again.

This time introduced by Sue Clayton, the filmmaker herself, who along with Laura Mulvey has recently (May 2017), published a long-awaited and important collection of essays on 1970s film, in their book Other Cinemas.

In May 2013 The Song of the Shirt, was screened at Iniva as part of the Keywords Exhibition, which went on to the Tate Liverpool in March 2014 along with the Fournier Street installation, itself part of the Leyden Gallery inaugural exhibition Fabricate (September 2013)
